Villa Of The Mysteries Pompeii

Villa of The Mysteries

by Pompeii Tours on April 13, 2010

The Villa Of The Mysteries Pompeii may be accessed from Pompeii. The Villa is named for the paintings in one room of the residence. Although the actual subject of the frescoes is hotly debated, the most common interpretation of the images is scenes of the initiation of a woman into a special cult of Dionysus, a mystery cult that required specific rites and rituals to become a member. As in other areas of Pompeii and Herculaneum, a number of bodies were come by in this villa, and plaster-of-paris casts were made of them. The ownership of the Villa is unknown, as is the case with many private homes in the city of Pompeii. Let’s continue to read more about Villa Of The Mysteries Pompeii.

Mt Vesuvius !

Mt Vesuvius is the only volcano on mainland Europe to have erupted within the last hundred years. Named after the naturalist Pliny, the type of eruption of Mt. Vesuvius is referred to as “Plinian.” Vesuvius has erupted more often than not since and is today regarded as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because of the population of 600,000 people living under its cone and its tendency towards pyroclastic explosive (Plinian) eruptions. Mt Vesuvius (in Italian Monte Vesuvio and in Latin Mons Vesuvius) is a volcano east of the bay of Naples, Italy. The crater of Vesuvius stands 1,282 meters above sea level, 230 meters deep, and has a diameter of about 650 meters. Mount Vesuvius is on the coast of the Bay of Naples, about
nine kilometres (six miles) east of Naples and a short distance from the shore. It is conspicuous in the beautiful landscape presented by that bay, when seen from the sea, with Naples in the foreground.

Mystery Religions

Dionysus was the god of fertility and wine. Dionysus did not start out as a Greek god. His cult had its roots in Thrace. Greeks accepted Osiris under the name of Dionysus in their mystery-cults. The Villa of the Mysteries is truly one of the most special places to see in Pompeii.

Initiation Rites

Villa of The Mysteries Initiation Rites imageDionysus was the god of fertility and wine. Dionysus did not start out as a Greek god. His cult had its roots in Thrace. Greeks accepted Osiris under the name of Dionysus in their mystery-cults. The ecstatic cult of Dionysus was originally thought to have been a late arrival in Greece from Thrace or Asia Minor, by virtue of the popularity of the cult . The relation of these two mystery cults is furthermore seen in the Bacchic myth in which Persephone gives birth to Dionysus, who is soon murdered and reborn. The non-Jews of Alexandria and Rome alleged that the cult of Dionysus was widespread.

About Rites Of Passage

Each various culture or society may choose to mark these rites in very various tips. Rites of passage in many cultures are used to mark the socially recognized transition to sexual maturity. Rites of passage have three phases: separation, transition, and re-incorporation. Most rites of passage are religious ceremonies. Most rites help people to understand their new roles in society. A rite of passage is a ritual event that marks a person’s progress from one status to another.

The Cult of Dionysus

Dionysus was the god of fertility and wine. Dionysus did not start out as a Greek god. His cult had its roots in Thrace. Greeks accepted Osiris under the name of Dionysus in their mystery-cults. The cult of Dionysus was very secretive with only woman worshipers and his male priests being admitted to the secret nighttime services. The Cult of Dionysus is strongly associated with satyrs, centaurs, and sileni, and its characteristic symbols are the bull, the serpent, the ivy. This Cult of Dionysus practiced ritual celebrations which consisted of alcoholic intoxication, orgies, human and animal sacrifices, and hysterical rampages.

Frescoes

The Byzantine culture produced frescoes from AD 500 to 1300 in what is now Russia, Ukraine and the Balkans. The fresco technique has been around for thousands of years. The early Christians fresco-ed the walls and vaults of their underground tombs, or catacombs, with Christian symbols and scenes from the Bible.

Although covered with meters of ash and other volcanic material, the villa sustained only minor damage in the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, and the majority of its walls, ceilings, and most particularly its frescoes survived largely undamaged.
